Banner Image and Menu Overview

Banner images and menus help visitors navigate key site sections, indicating specific areas within a larger site. Banner menus should highlight important sections rather than entire sites. These menus are only available on pages with existing banner images and use site-specific taxonomy for flexibility, particularly when page titles are lengthy. For example, within the Medical School’s sites, departmental pages might include a banner menu to signify they are part of the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM).

Implementation Timeline

This feature will be available starting October 28, 2024.

Requirements for a Banner Image and Menu

To have a banner image and menu, sites must meet each of these criteria:

  1. The site must be a departmental or school site (e.g., UHIT, Department of Physiology, or School of Medicine).
  2. All items in the banner menu must fit within the designated space.
  3. The banner menu title length must not exceed one line of text.
  4. The page must include a banner image.

Note: If your site doesn’t meet all these requirements but you still wish to have a banner menu, site administrators may submit a request to the Web Platform Team for review on a case-by-case basis.

Requesting a Banner Menu

Submit a General Support Request with:

  1. The page on which you’d like to include a banner menu.
  2. Names of the links to add to the menu.
  3. A business rationale for needing a banner menu.

Review Process

  1. Confirmation and Timeline: We’ll contact you with an expected timeline upon receiving the request.
  2. Preliminary Check: We’ll verify the request meets banner image requirements. If it does, it proceeds to the Web Platform Governance Board.
  3. Governance Review: The Board evaluates requests based on site type, alignment with site structure, platform goals, and leadership vision.
  4. Approval Status: If denied, we’ll provide a written explanation.
  5. Menu Adjustments: We’ll review link length to ensure menu fit, collaborating with you on adjustments if needed.
  6. Finalization: The Web Platform Team will add the banner menu to your site.
